Social Media Strategist
Location: Flexible / Remote within the US (HQ in NYC); Limited travel expected
Type: Full Time W-2 Employee
Reports To: VP, Marketing and Communications
Start Date: September 8
OVERVIEW
Work for America is the nonpartisan nonprofit rebuilding the talent pipeline into state and local government. Honored by Fast Company as one of 2026 World’s Most Innovative Companies, we connect talented professionals to public sector roles, help governments modernize how they recruit and hire, and inspire the next generation of public servants to see government as the most powerful place to drive progress.
ROLE SUMMARY
We’re looking for a Social Media Strategist who brings both creative and tactical prowess to their work, writes compellingly across formats, and loves the work of growing community online while championing the public servants who keep America moving. The right candidate is a rockstar performer, able to manage both building the strategy and doing the day-to-day work to bring it to life. You'll own cross-platform social strategy and execution as well as community engagement, developing content and copy across written and video formats that brings WFA's mission to life. You will also support WFA’s creator network in our partnership with TED and lead in the expansion of our creator community. You'll report into our VP of Communications and Marketing while working cross-functionally to help translate our broader vision into content that changes the way people think of public service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Strategy + Content Implementation
Execute day-to-day creative copywriting, content management and creative strategy across WFA's social platforms, from concept, voice, format, and cadence, to building brand and organizational storytelling that can flex across formats and platforms
Write both short-form and long-form copy that reflects WFA's mission and voice across LinkedIn, Instagram, and emerging channels
Manage publishing, scheduling, and the content calendar
Stay close to social, cultural, and media trends to surface timely ideas and storytelling opportunities
Collaborate with partner vendors to bring their strategic work into day-to-day execution
Develop social toolkits and other assets for external partners
Community Engagement
Own WFA's community presence: not just posting, but actively engaging in comments, responding to DMs, and showing up in community conversations
Develop and execute a community growth strategy, identifying where WFA's audience lives and how to meaningfully build within it
Monitor mentions and conversations across platforms and flag opportunities to engage
Creator Strategy
Serve as a key strategist for WFA’s creator partnerships, including identifying, building relationships with, and managing creators aligned with our mission
Develop and maintain WFA's creator pipeline and outreach process
Support creator partnerships and content development that feels authentic to both WFA's voice and their audience
Analytics + Optimization
Own social analytics and reporting, delivering regular insights on content performance, audience growth, and engagement
Use data to inform and continuously improve content strategy, not just report on it
Present analytics to marketing leadership with clear recommendations
QUALIFICATIONS
4–6 years of social media experience, ideally with a mix of brand management and strategy
A self-starter: capable of executing social media strategy and management as a team-of-one and getting scrappy, creative and innovative with limited resources and team member
A strong writer: you can write short copy that stops the scroll and long-form content that holds attention
Experience leading social strategy, not just executing it, and creating social content on every platform from YouTube to LinkedIn to TikTok
A track record of growing and engaging online communities, not just audiences
Experience developing or managing creator relationships and influencer partnerships
Comfort working with data: you can pull insights from analytics and translate them into strategy
Knowledge of multiple content formats across social platforms — from static and carousels to Reels and short video
Genuine enthusiasm for civic life, public service, and WFA's mission
Nice to Have: Experience in or adjacent to nonprofit, civic tech, or government sectors, and hands-on video production or creative direction experience
